COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office and the Covington Division of Police are proud to announce a new program that will begin soon throughout the Alleghany Highlands and the City of Covington. We will be calling this new program Alleghany Safe & Sound. The program will be very similar to programs throughout the United States.

STEP #1 – If you are a Senior Citizen who lives alone, has a lack of social contact with friends and family or you may have health challenges that can limit those contacts, then you should go to https://alleghanycountysheriff.com and complete the form and either drop it off or mail it to us at 268 W. Main St. Covington, VA, leave us a message on facebook or you can call 540-965-1770 or 540-965-6333 and leave your contact information with the dispatch center.

STEP #2 – Each weekday morning a dispatcher or other staff member will set aside a few minutes and contact you and others who are on the list to check on your safety and wellbeing. If by chance you do not answer the phone a second attempt will be made, then your designated emergency contact would be contacted and asked to physically check on you. If we cannot reach the emergency contact, a deputy or officer will then be dispatched to perform a wellness check to confirm your safety. In some cases, emergency medical services may be dispatched to your residence.
If you are out of town or on vacation, you simply need to notify us so we can change your scheduled contact until you return.

To enroll you simply need to provide some information by completing the initial assessment form. This will aid the Sheriff’s Office and the Police Department in getting to know more about you and your specific needs and will hopefully create a safer environment for those living in the Alleghany Highlands.
