Mildred McCabe

Mildred McCabe, a lifelong resident of Covington, passed away on September 5, 2025 at the age of 101 years old and is now reunited in Heaven with her late husband, Arthur and other loved ones.

She was born on August 28, 1924 in Covington to Henry E. Miller and Callie Lucas Miller. She attended Covington High School and Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. Arthur Matthews McCabe and Mildred were married on October 8, 1950 and were happily joined for nearly forty years before his passing.

Mildred’s philanthropic work in Covington and Alleghany County has been deep and widespread, occurring in over three quarters of a century of quiet public service. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught the 4 years olds Sunday School Class for over twenty years.

Mildred was active in many organizations including Women of the Church, Women of Montgomery Presbytery and the Covington Junior and Senior Women’s Club and at various times was president of each of these. The Woman’s Club honored her for 75 years of service earlier this year. She also helped organize and was the first of the Women of the Highlands Presbytery. She worked on the Committee for the Woodrow Wilson Centennial Drama and also headed up Covington’s Keep America Beautiful campaign for many years. Mildred was instrumental in raising funds to start the Alleghany Regional Hospital and for three years was Director of Fund Drives for the Great Alleghany United Fund. She was generous to many local causes including the McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church which her father helped found and the Boys Home. Always busy, Mildred even drove the bookmobile several summers in her younger days.

In her business life, she worked at the Citizens National Bank in Covington for twenty-seven years and has run her own home and apartment rental business for decades, serving hundreds of current and former Covington residents.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, her sister, Ivy and her brother, Ernest Sr. Clair “Buddy” Miller. Mildred is survived by her nieces, Betty (John) Owens and Deborah (Phil) Amick and her nephew, Buddy (Carnell) Miller, as well as 21 great nieces and nephews of three more
generations. She also leaves behind many special friends including Jo Ann Tucker, Cathy Rowan, Margie Clarke and Frances Withrow. Mildred’s favorite times were spent with her friends in Covington and her beloved cousins in Harrisonburg, Jean and Janet Fifer.

At Mildred’s request, there will be a private graveside service at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to First Presbyterian Church of Covington, The Boys Home or the Alleghany Humane Society. Loving Funeral Home is handling the
arrangements for the service; to view Mildred’s tribute page, please visit www.lovingfuneralhome1913.com.
