LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – In a well-attended Alleghany County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the members heard details on several community projects, including upgrades to the tennis courts at Alleghany High School and enhanced services efforts offered by the Alleghany Highlands Community Service Board.
In an effort to explain the increased cost proposal for the tennis court upgrades, members from the AHPS School Board and its administration offered a detailed slide presentation by Hunter Young of Civil Consulting Group, who gave extensive details about the proposed project. Proposed new facilities would include a brand new parking lot, sidewalks, restroom facilities, and six new tennis courts to be located in the secondary parking area above the school.
Young explained landscaping details, construction processes, and drainage enhancements that would benefit the upper area of the school and practice fields. The proposed project is estimated to cost $2.5 million.
Several members of the AHS Tennis teams, including Coaches Seth Davis and Katie Hinkle, expressed the need for upgraded facilities in a growing sport that would allow for nighttime matches and fewer scheduling conflicts.
Davis highlighted the struggles during matches when planning on the current courts near Clifton Academy. Due to the increased funding needs for the project, board members deferred action on the proposal in order to conduct research.
In other updates, Ingrid Barber presented the 26/27 fiscal year performance contract for consideration. She detailed several projects underway to increase recovery housing and services in the community during her presentation.
Corbin Stone of Robinson Farmer Cox Associates also presented results from the fiscal audit year ending June 30, 2024, with favorable outcomes.
The next board meeting will be held on Oct. 7.
