CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR), Local business owners Ron and Kristen McConnell celebrated the grand opening of two new specialty shops Thursday
evening, marking a significant milestone for continued economic development in the Alleghany Highlands. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was
attended by many local government officials and community leaders, highlighted the launch of two very unique businesses. An olive oil shop named
OLuv Oil, and a sweet shop named Sweetest Side, located in their continuing to be renovated downtown building, now known as the Five Sides Building.

Kathleen All of the Chamber of Commerce praised the entrepreneurs, noting the businesses’ potential to attract visitors. “These are two unique businesses in the Alleghany Highlands,” All said.

Debbie Loudermilk, speaking on behalf of Clifton Forge Town Council, emphasized the economic impact. “These are experiential businesses that are going to bring people to us instead of us always going to Roanoke to do our shopping,” Loudermilk said.

The business owners explained their vision centered on creating food-centric spaces that meet local needs. Kristen, one of the shop’s owners, highlighted the inclusive nature of their businesses, recounting how even a self-proclaimed non-cook recently purchased olive oil with enthusiasm. Ron detailed their strategic approach, explaining they purchased the building to relocate their law firm upstairs and saw an opportunity to revitalize the downtown space. “We decided on something we wanted here,” he said, noting their shared passion for food. The entrepreneurs plan to expand their food-focused concept, with a coffee shop and hot dog shop anticipated to open by the Fall Festival.

Fred Forbes from the Covington City Council stated, “The five sides building is really working out for the Town of Clifton Forge.” Online ordering for the olive oil shop will commence immediately, signaling their commitment to modern retail strategies.

Local officials, including representatives from Alleghany County and Clifton Forge’s town government, expressed strong support for the new businesses, viewing them as critical to community growth and economic revitalization. The event symbolized more than just a business opening; it represented a collaborative community effort to stimulate local economic development and create unique shopping experiences.

As part of the celebration, attendees were invited to tour the new spaces and learn about the businesses’ offerings, with local leaders expressing optimism about the potential for future growth. The ribbon-cutting serves as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of Clinton Forge and the Alleghany Highlands, demonstrating how small businesses can transform and energize local communities.

Five Sides is located at 511Main Street in Clifton Forge.
