COVINGTON Va. (VR) – Thursday night’s scrimmage might not count in the standings, but for the Cougars, it’s their first real look at life after last season’s 11-1 run and perfect 6-0 district record. The 2025 campaign brings a new conference home in the Shenandoah District and the challenge of replacing 15 graduated seniors — and this preseason matchup offers an early measure of where they stand.
The opponent? Graham High School, the reigning Virginia Class 2 state champions. The G-Men went 15-0 last year, 5-0 in Region 2A, and claimed their sixth state title in program history. Like the Cougars, they’ve lost a core group of seniors — 12 in total — but remain a program built on championship habits.
For Coach Fields, the night is about more than the scoreboard. Known for his belief in his players and his ability to keep them grounded, Fields treats scrimmages as a proving ground. “We’ll celebrate the good plays,” he says, “but then it’s back to work.”
Senior quarterback Desmond Jordan, who averaged 31 rushing yards per game last season, will lead the offense alongside running back Carter Nicely. Kicker Mason Hale, whose consistency could be key in tight games this fall, will also see preseason reps. With the likelihood of closer games in their new district, Friday’s test against a championship-caliber opponent will be valuable.
The Cougars aren’t looking for perfection just yet — they’re looking for answers. Who will step into the roles left vacant by graduation? How will the team respond against one of the toughest programs in the state? This scrimmage won’t define the season, but it could give a glimpse of how ready the Cougars are to make the jump into 2025.
The Cougars will host Graham at Casey Field on Thursday August 14th at 6pm.
