COVINGTON, Va. (VR)— Brenden Seckner, a rising senior at Alleghany High School, recently attended the 82nd American Legion Boys State of Virginia program at Radford University.
This highly competitive program selects up to two male students from each high school across the Commonwealth, underscoring Seckner’s accomplishment.
Virginia Boys State is a highly-touted leadership program that immerses students in the operation of local, county, and state government. Participants are elected to various offices and engage in legislative sessions, court proceedings, and elections, gaining practical experience with the democratic process. Delegates are organized into two political parties and work collaboratively to build effective government structures from the ground up.
The program’s primary goals are to develop civic leadership, encourage a deeper understanding of government, and foster a strong sense of responsibility to community and country.
Throughout the week at Radford, delegates heard from a variety of speakers who emphasized key aspects of leadership and citizenship. U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Russell Dash, the keynote speaker, outlined four essential duties of citizens: obeying laws, paying taxes, staying informed, and serving the community. State Sen. Travis Hackworth encouraged students to build meaningful relationships and seek common ground, while former House Speaker Kirk Cox shared valuable insights from his 30 years in Virginia politics. Attorney General Jason Miyares spoke on faith, gratitude, and
the importance of appreciating American freedoms, urging students to carry these values forward.
Reflecting on his experience, Seckner said, “Boys State was a great opportunity to learn from the leaders of our state and country.”
His time at Boys State has equipped him with leadership skills and a deeper civic understanding, tools that will serve him well as he continues to make contributions to his community and beyond. In addition to attending Alleghany High School, Seckner is also a senior at Jackson River Governor’s School this year.
“Brenden is a superb representative of an exceptional group of today’s youth that are Jackson River Governor’s School students. I am not surprised by his selection to represent Alleghany High School for this prestigious and valued program. In addition to his academic excellence, his personal characteristics and actions serve as an extraordinary example and inspiration for others,” said Eddie Graham, director of the Jackson River Governor’s School.
Beyond the classroom, Seckner is actively involved in his school and community. He is a member of the AHS Key Club, the National Honor Society, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He volunteers at the Clifton Forge Food Pantry, helping provide food and clothing to those in need. On the soccer field, he has been a starter on the Alleghany boys varsity team since his freshman year and has also played travel soccer for the Virginia United team in Roanoke for several years.
