LOW MOOR, Va. (VR)— When schools open in August, students in Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will not be allowed to use their cell phones at all during the school day.
The new “Bell-to-Bell Cell Phone-Free” policy means phones must be turned off and put away from the time students arrive until the final bell rings. This includes classrooms, hallways, and all other school areas.
This new rule is a change from AHPS’ previous policy, which allowed high school students to use phones during lunch.
The update follows a new state law signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin that requires all Virginia public schools to limit phone use. The goal is to help students stay focused, reduce anxiety, and support their mental health. This law builds on an earlier order from the governor asking schools to remove phone distractions from the classroom.
The state says research shows that too much screen time and social media can lead to more anxiety and depression, and less focus in school. The National Institutes of Health reports that daily screen use by teens has jumped from 25 percent to 93 percent since the COVID-19 pandemic.
As preparations for the 2025-26 school year continue, AHPS will keep families informed to help make the change as easy as possible.
