ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (VR) – Alleghany County Public Safety and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the implementation of a new Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) system designed to improve response times, enhance caller care, and ensure that emergency medical services are delivered as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Beginning this month, all 911 medical calls in Alleghany County will be handled using the upgraded EMD system, which allows trained dispatchers to follow nationally recognized protocols to gather critical information and provide life-saving instructions over the phone while help is on the way.
What this means for you:
When you call 911 for a medical emergency, you may notice that the dispatcher asks more detailed questions than before. These questions help determine the nature and severity of the emergency to ensure that the appropriate resources are sent quickly and safely. It is important to know that these questions do not delay help and emergency units are being dispatched in the background as the call is ongoing whenever possible.
Dispatchers may also provide real-time guidance over the phone, such as instructions for CPR or other first-aid measures, which can make a critical difference before first responders arrive.
The new EMD system is part of Alleghany County’s ongoing commitment to public safety, emergency preparedness, and service excellence.
