COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The City of Covington Parks and Recreation Department unveiled its latest community project, the Maple Tree Trail Mini Golf course at the Jackson River Sports Complex, marking a significant milestone in local recreational development. The project pays homage to to Covington’s mini golf
history, particularly remembering the Cadd family’s previous mini golf venue on Craig Street. City officials emphasized the importance of continuing this community tradition while creating a modern, accessible recreational space.
Spanning a previously unused wooded area, the course features 18 meticulously designed holes that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. Local contractors were instrumental in transforming the site, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment that showcases the community’s commitment to local talent and craftsmanship.
Beyond mini golf, the complex offers a comprehensive recreational experience. A new playground, walking trail, and a riverside cabana provide multiple attractions for visitors of all ages. The trail now connects to the Jackson River Scenic Trail, highlighting the area’s interconnected park system.
“We’ve created what I call the ‘Walmart of parks’,” stated Covington City Manager Allen Dressler during the opening remarks, highlighting the diverse amenities packed into the compact space. The course features special accommodations, including adaptive walkways for individuals with physical challenges and plastic golf clubs for young children.
Operating hours are designed to maximize community enjoyment: Monday through Thursday 10 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am to 11 pm, and Sunday 1 pm to 9 pm. A unique feature includes evening lighting, allowing teenagers and young adults additional entertainment options during weekend nights.
Pricing is family-friendly: $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 4-18, and free for children 3 and under. The complex also offers credit card payments, though a small processing fee will be applied. The recreation department hints at potential special events, particularly around Halloween, promising additional community engagement opportunities.
Future plans include exploring additional funding through the Department of Transportation for further access improvements and potential expansions.Local contractors from Clifton Forge to Covington contributed to the project, with special recognition given to the Jackson River Technical Center students who crafted benches that are placed along the trail.
More than just a recreational facility, the Maple Tree Trail Mini Golf course stands as a vibrant symbol of community pride and innovation. It invites residents and visitors to experience a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational enjoyment, reflecting the Alleghany Highlands’ commitment to creating meaningful public spaces that bring people together.
