COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The 4th of July is right around the corner, and while fireworks may light up the night sky, the real spark of summer is found in the great outdoors. With long days, warm temperatures, and a stunning natural landscape right in our backyard, now is the perfect time to beat the heat and dive into everything our region has to offer.

We’re blessed to live in an area surrounded by mountains, forests, trails, rivers, and lakes — each one offering an open invitation to get outside and play. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or just looking for a peaceful float, there’s something nearby for every level of adventure.

Our local trail systems are nothing short of incredible. From winding mountain bike routes to family-friendly hiking paths, the scenic options are endless. If you’re looking for an early morning escape before the sun really kicks in, grab your gear and head to one of the many shaded trails that offer breathtaking views without a long drive.

When it comes to water-based fun, we have two awesome lakes just minutes from town — each offering their own kind of paradise. One of them even boasts the title of the clearest, blue-green water in all of Virginia. Whether you’re into swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, or just floating lazily in the sun, our two lakes are the perfect place to cool off with family and friends.

Boat launches and rental services make access easy, and designated swim areas provide safe places to splash around or unwind by the shore. Don’t forget your sunscreen — and maybe a fishing rod, too. Anglers will be pleased to know the lakes are well-stocked and known for their bass and trout.

If you’re looking for a relaxing float on the river, the Jackson river is the perfect spot. There are access points throughout the city and county and each section of the river provides a different experience.

A family friendly location that you can include a history lesson with would be Humpback Bridge, just West of Covington. The mid-19th century bridge was built in 1857 and a fun fact is that the hump is 4ft higher in the middle. On a hot summer day, Humpback is the perfect place to cool off. Locals and visitors flock to the shaded five-acre park to wade in the refreshing Dunlap Creek and enjoy a picnic under the trees.

We cannot talk about fun in the water without talking safety, according to the Virginia Department of Health between 2020-2024 there were nearly 500 people that accidentally drowned. The VDH stresses the importance of life vests, don’t get in the water by yourself, be aware of water and weather conditions, learn how to swim and perform CPR. For a complete listing visit www.vdh.virginia.gov.

If golf is more your style, summer is prime time to tee off. Local courses are in great shape this time of year, with lush fairways and scenic mountain backdrops that make even a tough round enjoyable. Whether you’re aiming for a quick nine holes or a full 18, our area’s golf scene offers peaceful courses with just the right amount of challenge.

The Altamont 9-Hole disc golf course offers a fun and balanced layout that caters to both beginners and seasoned players. The course is nestled in the scenic hills of Altamont park, which features both open fairways and wooded terrain.

The Jackson River sports complex boats large fields, cabanas, playgrounds, tennis courts, walking trail and soon to be open putt putt golf. You’ll also find shaded areas with picnic tables and the amphitheater, which you can enjoy live music for free throughout the summer. If you enjoy watching softball, the sports complex hosts some of the best tournaments.

The Covington Lumberjacks are a proud member of the Valley League, a summer baseball program featuring top-level collegiate talent from across the country. Based at historic Casey Field, the Lumberjacks offer fans exciting, high-caliber baseball—all for free. A trip to the ballpark isn’t complete without stopping by the concession stand for a snack while taking in the game. With the Valley League boasting over 1,100 alumni who’ve gone on to play professional baseball, fans have the chance to see tomorrow’s stars in action today, right in the heart of Covington.

Our area is packed with outdoor adventures, from fishing and canoeing to camping and even testing your aim at disc golf. There’s no reason to stay inside with so many options right at your fingertips. Best of all, many of these activities are just a short walk or drive from town—and when the sun starts to set, you can catch a Jacks game to round out a perfect day outdoors.

The 4th of July brings fireworks, cookouts, and celebration—but it’s also a great reminder of how lucky we are to live in a place where outdoor adventure is always close by. So pack your gear, rally your friends, and dive into everything summer has to offer. And don’t just take Topher’s word for it—step outside and see for yourself all the beauty and fun waiting right here in our own backyard.
