The 126-year-old Smurfit Westrock paper mill in Covington, VA, allegedly uses a boiler built in 1940 and has been among the worst polluters in the nation for the industry in recent years — including for releasing the No. 1 most nitrogen oxide (NOx) among large paper mills in 2020 (2,808 tons) and 2,287 tons in 2023. COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Cruisers are gearing up for one of the area’s biggest events, the Back the Blue Weekend.

This event will be held on June 20-21 at the beautiful Jackson River Sports Complex.

The weekend kicks off Friday night June 20 at 6:00 PM with a performance by the GRAB BAG BAND. The GRAB BAG BAND performs a variety of music and is always ready to have a good time. In addition to the concert, the Alleghany Cruisers will be hosting a Cruise In from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm. This is a totally free event and is being presented by the City of Covington Department of Parks & Recreation.

On Saturday June 21 the main event comes to the Jackson River Sports Complex, the 6th Annual Back the Blue Scholarship Car Show. This event will run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm with registration opening at 8:00 am.

The show is open to any type of vehicle.

“The Back the Blue Scholarship Car Show has become one of the regions most anticipated car shows.”: said Alleghany Cruisers President Robert Floyd. “We are really excited about the sixth edition of this great, family friendly, event.”

In addition to the many vehicles, the show will feature food and merchandise vendors, activities for children, a live D.J., a 50/50 drawing, law enforcement displays and demonstrations, many door prizes, and a large raffle including a two-piece deluxe tool box, a Blackstone flat top grille, a DeWalt Drill, a lottery ticket basket, a Yamaha licensed Raptor junior ATV, and many more items. There will also be $1,000 in cash drawings for those that enter a vehicle in the show. This year each participating law enforcement agency will also be presenting an award to their favorite vehicle in the show.

All of the proceeds from the Back the Blue Scholarship Car Show are contributed to the Back the Blue Scholarship Fund. Each year the Alleghany Cruisers award scholarships to area high school seniors that wish to further their education in the law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field. For 2025 the scholarship was awarded to Alleghany High School senior’s Ashlee Deem and Keegan Morris. Both of these area graduates will
be furthering their education in the criminal justice field.

“The Alleghany Cruisers are committed to supporting our men and women that protect and serve in the law enforcement community.”: said Floyd. “The purpose of this event is to both raise money for the scholarship and honor those working in law enforcement, and of course, have a great time doing it.”

The first 100 show entrants will receive dash plaques and goodie bags. And kids can get in on the show too, in addition to the regular car show there will be a model car show.

When the sun sets on the Back the Blue Scholarship Car Show it will be time for the 3rd Annual Back the Blue Bash. This event will be held at the River Rock Amphitheater from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. ROCK BOTTOM BRIDGE will be performing a high energy concert that is sure to be a hit with area residents. In addition to the free concert there will be food service, a 50/50 drawing, a drawing for a flat screen TV, and a raffle for a G Force
GF3P shotgun.

This is a totally free event.

The Alleghany Cruisers hope that everyone will come out and join us for a fun weekend of cars, music, and much, much more.
