William Potter
Mr. William Andrew “Dinkle” Potter, 83, of Rocky Mount, formerly of Covington, passed peacefully Thursday, May 29, 2025, at his residence. He was the husband of Iva Madeline (Sue) “Pudge” Potter, with whom he was married for 64 years.
Mr. Potter was born July 21, 1941, in Baltimore, Md. He was reared by his grandparents, Lacy Otmer Alphin and Nancy Jane Armstrong Alphin.
A resident of this community his entire life, he was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Covington Moose Lodge #610 L.O.O.M. and Crystal Forest Hunt Club.
During his working career, Mr. Potter was a maintenance operator at Hercules Inc. He retired from Hercules and owned and operated Potter’s Painting. He was an animal lover. He was proud to have always attended his children and grandchildren’s games and other events and activities. He loved the sunshine and his Harley.
In addition to his wife, Iva M. (Sue) Potter, Mr. Potter is survived by a son, William Lacy “Teense” Potter, of Caldwell, W.Va., and his fiancé, Tammy; one daughter, Kimberly Potter “Missy” Lee and her husband, Kevin, of Rocky Mount; grandchildren Kaitlyn Lacy Potter “Cheeks” Law and husband Andrew, Hanah Marie “Rooster” Healy and her husband Michael, and Dustin Christopher “Mook” Lee and his wife Emily; seven great-grandchildren, Laeland, Josiah, Noah, Teagan Lacy, Alex, Lukas, and Wyatt; and a number of special nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter-in-law, Susan Carter Parker Potter; his grandparents, Lacy Otmer Alphin and Nancy Jane Armstrong Alphin, with whom he was reared; a niece who was like a daughter, Christine Etters; and his soul mate cat, Bandy.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 7, at 2 p.m., from the graveside at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Warren officiating.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Alleghany Humane Society, 9313 Rich Patch Rd., Covington, Va. 24426. Bill’s pacemaker will be donated to the ASPCA to be used to save dogs suffering from congestive heart failure.
