LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – In a fiercely contested matchup defined by tiebreakers and grit, the Alleghany Lady Cougars fell just short against Waynesboro in the first round of the Class 3, Region C girls’ tennis tournament on Friday. The visiting Little Giants edged out a 5-3 win at Clifton Academy, sealing the victory with a crucial doubles point after a hard-fought round of singles play.

The Cougars showed resilience throughout the match, especially in singles competition, where Mylee Dunbar and Lexy Wills each picked up key victories to keep Alleghany in the hunt. Dunbar battled through a tense tiebreaker to notch her win, while Wills showcased her consistency and mental toughness in a tight two-set match.

Three of the six singles matchups went the distance into tiebreakers, highlighting the intensity of the contest and the determination of both teams to advance deeper into the postseason. Despite the final score, the Lady Cougars made Waynesboro earn every point.

With the team portion of the season now wrapped, Alleghany turns its focus to individual regional competition, where doubles duo Alayla and Lainie are set to represent the Cougars in the regional doubles tournament on Tuesday. The pair will look to carry forward the team’s fighting spirit as they aim to extend their postseason run.

Waynesboro improves to 8-7 on the season with the win and moves on to the regional semifinals, while Alleghany finishes its team season with heads held high and eyes on individual glory.
