ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (VR) – The Varsity Lady Cougars put together a complete team performance Friday night, knocking off Glenvar 3-1 in a game that showcased dominant pitching, timely hitting, and sharp defense. Emma Skidmore was steady and reliable in the circle, tossing all seven innings while allowing just four hits and one earned run. She struck out six and walked four, keeping the Glenvar lineup off balance and off the scoreboard until late in the game.
The Cougars struck early thanks to Kelsey Nicely, who came up big in the second inning with a solo home run to left field. The swing brought the Alleghany dugout to life and set the tone for the game. In the third, Kaylee Nicely extended the lead with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0. The Cougars tacked on a third run later in the game thanks to an RBI from Tyra Rose, giving Skidmore plenty of breathing room to finish the job.
Offensively, Alleghany stayed patient and smart, collecting seven hits while avoiding any costly mistakes.
But just as impressive as the bats was the defense behind Skidmore. The Cougars played error-free softball, with Addison Morris leading the way in the field with six clean plays. Glenvar had moments, with leadoff hitter Z Hayes going 2-for-4 and A Moles driving in their lone run, but the Highlanders were never able to string together enough momentum to threaten Alleghany’s lead. The Ladies will host Floyd County on Tuesday night.
