ROANOKE COUNTY, Va (VR) – When the Alleghany Cougars step on the diamond, they mean business—and on Friday night, they turned Glenvar’s home turf into a Cougar showcase. With a commanding 5-0 shutout victory over the Highlanders, Alleghany put together a clinic in dominance—highlighted by a thunderous fourth inning and an outstanding pitching performance.
For the first three innings, the scoreboard stayed quiet. But the Cougars were only waiting for their moment. In the top of the fourth, the floodgates opened—and Glenvar couldn’t stop the surge. Landon Arritt got it started, drawing a bases-loaded walk that brought in the first run. Moments later, Tanner Hoke stepped in and did the same. Then, disaster for the Highlanders—an error on a high-pressure play allowed three more runs to cross the plate.
Five runs. One inning. Total takeover.
And with that cushion, Alleghany handed the ball to their ace—and he did the rest.
Trey Cook was in complete command. The right-hander delivered a dazzling complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out six across seven dominant innings. Backing Cook was a Cougar defense that played airtight baseball. Not a single error. Not a single mistake. Just clean, confident plays that kept Glenvar from ever threatening.
Offensively, the Cougars kept the pressure on. Tucker Phillips led the charge with two hits in four at-bats, while Arritt and Hoke each picked up an RBI and worked smart at-bats in key moments. On the flip side, Glenvar starter Cale Vaughan struck out six but couldn’t escape Alleghany’s relentless pressure in the fourth. Glenvar’s only hit came from Cam Feazell, who managed a single—but that was all the Highlanders could muster against Cook’s command and Cougar defense.
Alleghany proved they belong at the top. This win wasn’t just about the score—it was about the way they did it. Tough at the plate. Unshakable on defense. Untouchable on the mound. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Radford.
