CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – On Tuesday, May 13, the Town Council of Clifton Forge gathered to share updates and approve several agenda items before presenting the budget at next month’s meetings. A public hearing began the night to present details regarding the conveyance of the Alleghany County tax parcels fronting A Street and Church Street. The property is most commonly known as the Jefferson School and was recently acquired from the Alleghany Highlands Public School Board after deed searches revealed it was inherited by school board mergers in the past.
The council also heard discussion on a rezoning initiative of the property from Clifton Forge Public domain to Business General, allowing the property to be used for community resourcing and housing in the future. The Clifton Forge Planning Committee previously met and voted to approve the rezoning.
In other exciting news, Clifton Forge Main Street requested permission to hold the Downtown Market on Fridays from 4-7 p.m. in collaboration with “Friday in the Forge” events. The market will be available from June 6-Sept. 5 and promotes local vendors and farmers’ market displays. Council unanimously approved the move, and several members expressed appreciation for the planning and collaboration from all parties involved.
Council members also heard and accepted a proclamation to declare the month of May as National Speech, Language, and Hearing Month, recognizing the field of speech pathology and audiology.
Lastly, the council voted to appoint Clifton Forge Mayor, Jeff Irvine, as a participating member of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Board, allowing Clifton Forge residents a voice in area business initiatives.
Town Manager Chuck Unroe briefly offered updates on the waterline projects, the paving process, and some additions to the sensory trail. Unroe encouraged residents to utilize the community garden plots that offer raised bed gardening space to grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables for a nominal fee. Those interested can reach out to Town Hall.
The first budget hearing for the 2025-2026 fiscal year will be held on June 10 for those interested, and a second hearing is tentatively scheduled for June 24. Questions and concerns can be directed to council members or staff at town hall.
