COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – In a commanding performance, the Covington Middle School (CMS) girls’ softball team triumphed over Lucy Addison with a resounding 19-1 win, showcasing both explosive offense and effective pitching. The game was an all-around team effort, with standout performances from several players and strong contributions on both sides of the ball.
The CMS offense was in full gear, racking up 19 runs on 16 hits. Mariah Skidmore led the charge, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and keeping the pressure on Lucy Addison’s defense throughout the game. Alexis Craft added a major highlight with a solo home run, igniting the CMS dugout and further extending the team’s commanding lead.
Other key contributions came from Remmy Anderson, who picked up 2 hits, and Mckenlee Knick, who also contributed with 2 hits of her own. Brooklyn Unroe, Adele Harris, Chessie Wolfe, Alyssa Shifflett, Maya Howard, Joslyn Vess, and Tori Bowers each added to the team’s offensive outburst, ensuring the team maintained a strong and balanced attack throughout the game.
On the mound, CMS’s pitching staff was dominant, limiting Lucy Addison to just one run. Lydia Herstine started the game and struck out 2 batters while walking just 1. Maya Howard followed with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk, continuing the team’s strong pitching effort. Reliever Alyssa Shifflett recorded 1 strikeout but struggled with control, issuing 3 walks. However, Elizabeth Bazzrea, came in to close out the game with a solid outing, striking out 3 batters, walking 1, and allowing 2 hit-by-pitches. The pitching staff kept Lucy Addison off balance, never allowing them to get any sustained offensive momentum.
Head Coach Amy Bartley Simmons praised the team’s performance while emphasizing the importance of ongoing development. “The focus is on developing new skill sets and techniques and continuing to grow as players,” said Simmons. “While the win is great, we’re constantly looking to improve and refine our game, and this victory is a testament to the hard work the players are putting in.”
