One by one the announcements came Friday.
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice closed schools and put high school athletics on hold indefinitely Friday morning.
Later in the morning, the Virginia High School League postponed all spring sport contests until March 30.
And finally Friday afternoon Virginia Governor Ralph Northam ordered K-12 schools in Virginia to close for a minimum of two weeks.
It was the close of a unprecedented week in sports in response to the continued spread of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.
Athletic directors at all three area high schools — Charity Hale at Covington, Jared Brown at Alleghany and Chase Davidson at Bath County — confirmed Friday that no practices or contests will be held until at least March 30.
The City of Covington has announced that all of their indoor and outdoor facilities are closed to the public until further notice. The YMCA Center and the registrar’s office remain open.
