COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Varsity baseball team found themselves in a dramatic showdown Wednesday evening, emerging victorious in a 3-2 walk-off win over the Rockbridge County Wildcats. Despite a tough loss the previous night, the Cougars demonstrated resilience and skill, clinching the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a clutch single by Trey Cook, who brought home the winning run.
The game was a pitcher’s duel, with both teams showing solid performances on the mound. Alleghany’s pitchers struck out 10, while Rockbridge sat down four. The Wildcats struck first, with Drew Potter hitting a triple in the top of the first to put them on the board. They added another run in the third when Nolan Stines singled down the left-field line, pushing the score to 2-0.
But the Cougars weren’t backing down. They tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Carson Brown’s single was followed by a fielder’s choice from Tucker Phillips, which drove in the much-needed runs to knot the game at 2-2.
Phillips started on the mound for the Cougars, delivering a solid performance over six innings. He allowed six hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking two. Jalen Raether came in as relief and pitched one shutout inning, allowing just one hit and striking out two, preserving the tie and setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Head coach Kessinger praised his team after the game, noting, “It’s good when things you work on in practice show up in the game and it works out.” He acknowledged the toughness of Rockbridge, stating that he was very pleased with how his team played against such a formidable opponent.
Assistant coach Burdette also commended the team, particularly for their defensive efforts, saying, “We caught a couple of pop-ups, especially in challenging conditions like a windy day. You guys did it today, great job.”
Raether, who had two hits in four at-bats, led the Cougars offensively, while Phillips, Brown, and Cook each contributed with an RBI. The team was also active on the base paths, stealing four bases during the game.
For the Wildcats, Stines and Austyn Gannutz each had two hits, and the one-two punch of Potter and Stines was tough to handle as they each drove in a run.
The Cougars’ win was a much-needed bounce-back after their loss the previous night, and it demonstrated their ability to rise to the occasion. The next challenge will come Monday when they play at home against Wilson Memorial, which will test the Cougars’ resolve once again.
