COVINGTON, Va. (VR) –  The Alleghany Cougars delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday night, overpowering the James Monroe Varsity Mavericks with an 11-1 victory at Casey Field. From the first inning, the Cougars established control, using a mix of disciplined hitting and dominant pitching to secure the win. Alleghany wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Trey Cook set the tone early, driving in a run with a single in the first inning. The momentum carried into the second, where the Cougars extended their lead. Zeke Saville worked a bases-loaded walk, Landon Arritt grounded out to bring in another run, and Jalen Rather added another RBI groundout, giving Alleghany a comfortable cushion. The biggest offensive surge came in the fourth inning when the Cougars exploded for five runs on just two hits. Saville once again displayed patience at the plate, drawing a walk that pushed across a run. Rather followed with an RBI single, and Cook contributed with a groundout that plated two more. An error by the Mavericks allowed an additional run to score, putting the game out of reach. On the mound, Tucker Phillips delivered an outstanding performance for Alleghany. The starting pitcher was nearly untouchable, allowing just two hits and one unearned run over five innings. His command was impeccable, striking out seven batters without issuing a single walk. His efficiency kept the Mavericks’ offense silent throughout the game. For James Monroe, Levi Taylor took the loss after struggling through two innings. He allowed four runs on two hits while battling control issues, walking four batters before being relieved. Rather and Cook proved to be a potent combination in the lineup, each driving in two runs for the Cougars. Rather, along with Rilee Webb, led the team with two hits apiece. The Cougars also demonstrated patience at the plate, drawing a total of eight walks, with Kai Rowland, Tyler Jackson, and Saville each earning two free passes. James Monroe’s offense struggled to find a rhythm, though Tyson Meadows and Baylee Ridgeway each managed a hit. Defensively, the Mavericks turned two double plays, but it wasn’t enough to slow down Alleghany’s relentless attack.

With the victory, the Cougars continue to build momentum early in the season as they prepare to face Staunton on Thursday.
