CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS) and the Town of Clifton Forge are collaborating to host the 2nd Annual Developmental Services Awareness Festival on March 29th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This lively event will take place on Church Street showcasing food and craft vendors, entertainers, businesses, medical professionals, local fire departments, and AHCS staff, providing engaging activities and entertainment for attendees of all ages throughout the day. The festival aims to raise awareness about developmental disabilities in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a cause initiated by President Reagan in 1987 to highlight the needs and potentials of Americans with developmental disabilities while ensuring they receive the support and opportunities necessary to lead fulfilling lives.
This year marks the second edition of the event, which is dedicated to honoring individuals with diverse abilities and challenging the misconceptions surrounding developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Ingrid Barber, the Executive Director, highlighted that the event’s significance stems from illustrating how people with and without disabilities unite to foster resilient communities, raise public awareness, celebrate those they serve, and promote resources for developmental disabilities. Several
community organizations, including the AHCS prevention team, Boys Home, Driven Designs, and Safe Homes, will be actively involved in the festival. Attendees can look forward to activities such as face painting, Creative Kids, Supportive Saturdays, sensory experiences, and crafts.
Food lovers will find an array of delicious offerings from vendors like Blowing Smoke BBQ, The Friendly Fork, and GiGi’s Walking Desserts. The entertainment lineup features performances from Country Mountain Thunder, Garlynda’s Fancy Feet, A1 Studios, Rebels of Rhythm, Cora Dance
Alleghany, and Pop Rockers, ensuring a diverse range of enjoyment for all. Additional vendors may be added as the event approaches, promising an exciting array of activities and attractions for attendees.
In a recent statement, Ingrid Barber, Executive Director of AHCS, emphasized the importance of the developmental disabilities awareness event, proudly noting the organization’s role in bringing together the community to support individuals and families impacted by developmental disabilities.
Barber stressed that raising awareness is essential to promoting education and enhancing community connections.
