Evelyn Simmons
Evelyn Wise Simmons (93) departed this life on March 3, 2025, at The Brian Center in Low Moor, Virginia.
Ms. Simmons was born on March 19, 1931, in Staunton, VA, the daughter of the late Carl and Lucille Wise Simmons. Evelyn’s education included James Madison University and Bethany Theological Seminary. Evelyn’s entire career was focused on religion education, both in public school teaching for twenty-three years and on the Board of Weekday Religious Education (WRE). Following retirement, Ms. Simmons gave many volunteer hours at The Arts and Crafts Center (Clifton Forge,) the LewisGale Hospital Alleghany (Low Moor, VA) and Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church (Covington). Evelyn also volunteered for the Salvation Army and worked the voting polls. She was especially grateful for the Humanitarian Award presented in 2011 by the TAP Board of Commissioners.
Ms. Simmons is survived by nephews, Phillip Simmons (Linda), Charles Smith (Susie), Glenn Simmons (Kittie) and Brian Smith as well as nieces, Virginia Simmons and Lyn Miller (Joel.) She is also survived by eleven grand nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Simmons, Jr.; her sister, Helen Dean Smith; her brother-in-law, Warren Smith; and a nephew, Wendell Simmons.
A service of remembrance and interment will take place in the near future.
Evelyn suggests that memorial tributes be sent to Granbery Memorial Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, VA 24426, to LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, 1 ARH Lane, Low Moor, VA 24457, or to a charity of one’s choice.
