The town authorities have the Court Street Hill roped off especially for the coasters. Prospect Street Hill also sees many sleds coming down “ticket split,” some of them going as far s Highland Street. Hawthorne Street, wits its asphalt and brick street, also holds big crowds daily and much larger ones at night. The sleds fly down this hill, going as far as the Monroe Street Crossing. And, then, too, there is the Magazine Street Hill, which has been a favorite coasting hill for many years. One large “Bob” sled, covered with boys and girls, threw a line to a kind-hearted motorist Friday and were towed all over town.

Weekend Thefts Are Reported
A grand larceny and a series of petty larcenies committed over the weekend according to Alleghany Sheriff Max W Swoope. The grand larceny involved theft of some tractor parts, five or six quarts of oil and some soft drinks belonging to Steve Bennett of Route 2 and others. These items had been left pulpwood cutters at a job site along route 616 in Rich Patch and have a combined estimated value in excess of $100. In addition, the sheriff’s department received reports of radio speaker stolen from a parked U.S. Forrest Service vehicle in Dolly Ann Hollow; a battery and an assortment of tools stolen from a State Highway Department truck parked along Route 18, and a shovel and double-headed axe stolen from a shed at the Catholic cemetery in Low Moor. Investigating officers reported the shed was apparently broken into for the purpose of skinning a deer, and the intruders then apparently decided to take the shovel and axe with them when they finished.

The capacity of the current plant is 200,000 gallons per day, once the expansion is completed the new capacity will be 500,000. The Department of Environmental Quality has stopped all projects going into the Low Moor Commerce Park and the two new schools proposed to be built across the Jackson River could not be constructed if the plant was not upgraded. The $2,514,900 project is being constructed by Littleton and Associates of Covington, Robert C. Littleton, president of the company, reported that the project is on schedule and will be finished this fall.

Dozens of members of Virginians Against Handgun Violence urged key legislators on Monday to support three bills that would close the last loopholes that do not permit guns to be brought on school grounds. “Under existing law, you could legally come to a PTA meeting packing a weapon,” Dillard said. “Guns and schools simply do not mix”
