COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — At approximately 9:25 a.m. Thursday, February 6, an Alleghany Highlands Public Schools bus traveling to Callaghan Elementary was hit by a large branch from a falling tree. This occurred at the intersection of Natural Well Road and East Morris Hill Road.
There were students onboard bus; however, no injuries were reported. The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office was notified, and there was minimal damage to the bus. The bus is safe for use.
The incident was reported immediately, and all protocols of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools were properly followed. AHPS staff responded immediately following these protocols. As is also the practice of AHPS, families were notified.
AHPS serves approximately 2,700 students. The school division was created in July 2022 through the merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center.
