COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – At approximately 4:01 PM on February 2, 2025, deputies from the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office were alerted to a distressing situation involving four juveniles from Nelson County. Matthew Myers reported that he was following a tan Mercury Mountaineer, with unknown Pennsylvania license plates, which he believed had kidnapped his children.
The vehicle, in an attempt to evade, exited Interstate 64 at Exit 1 (Jerrys Run) and proceeded onto National Forest property. Deputies responded promptly to the scene and made contact with Myers, who had become stuck on a slippery roadway. While deputies continued their efforts further down the road, they discovered that the vehicle had become inoperable and was abandoned.
During the search, Myers provided an update, stating that his children ran away with two other juveniles. The group consisted of four minors, aged 16, 16, 15, and 12. The investigation immediately went from a possible abduction to a search for four missing juveniles. After an extensive search of the area, all four juveniles were located.
The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to confirm that the juveniles were still reported as missing, which was confirmed. In coordination with Nelson County authorities, it was decided that Myers would return the juveniles to Nelson County, where the sheriff’s office would ensure they were returned to a safe and stable environment.
The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the Virginia State Police, the Covington Police Department, and the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office for their valuable assistance in locating the juveniles safely.
