Alleghany kicks off girls basketball season with road win

ROANOKE – Alleghany kicked off their 2025 girls’ basketball season on Tuesday with a season-opening 47-31 victory on the road over Roanoke Catholic High School. 
 
The Cougars were led by senior Kelsey Nicely who led all scorers with a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Nicely knocked down seven of her 13 field goal attempts.
 
Senior Bryce Leitch and sophomore Ja’Kara Heighter each scored 10 points apiece. Leitch also reeled in six rebounds, while Heighter grabbed four rebounds and a team-high four assists.
 
The Cougars controlled the tempo of the game from the opening tip, while never trailing throughout the game. AHS opened up a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter, which they maintained for the final three quarters. 
 
Junior Ty’Aieja Smith added eight points and knocked down a pair of free throws the Cougars attempt                                                                  
 
The Celtics were led by a team-high 12 points from Natalie Smith.
