Warm Springs, Va- The Bath County Chargers are having an amazing season under head coach Jake Phillips. Their seniors have stepped up and taken on leadership roles, the offensive line fires off the ball and holds their blocks, and the running backs look disciplined staying in their running lanes.
The Bath receivers have been running some precision routes and always seem to get space on their defenders. The piece that combines all of those great things is the absolute beast mode quarterback play from senior phenom Wyatt Campbell.
On the defensive side of the ball, Bath County is just as impressive, with their D- line constantly breaking through and stopping plays from even getting started. The times when the line doesn’t break through, the linebackers are one step behind them and have made running up the middle almost impossible for the opposition. The Chargers secondary, likewise, have been in lockdown mode all season. Teams trying to pass the ball on the Chargers have had little to no success because their receivers have had a Charger glued to them.
All these things combined make it no surprise that the Chargers haven’t lost one game this season and they are not just beating teams, but mostly annihilating them.
In their first post regular season game, the Chargers, while enjoying home field advantage, defeated Fort Chiswell in dominating fashion. This past week Bath County took on the Green Wave from Narrows for the second time this season and won the semifinal matchup with a score of 49-14, putting them on a collision course with another team that’s had a great deal of success this season, The Grayson County Blue Devils.
The Blue devils have a record of 8-3 which isn’t a testament to their season thus far as they’ve played a schedule packed with some powerhouse opposition. Their losses have come from teams such as Alleghany, Carrol County, and Bluefield. None of their losses could be considered blowouts though, but when you look at their wins many have been by 20 and 30 points. In Their most convincing wins, they blew out teams such as Craig County 42-0 and Fort Chiswell 40-3, both of which Bath played and beat with similar scores of 62-13 against Craig and 42-6 against Fort Chiswell.
Grayson also has some standout talent like wide receiver Mac Goad who averages a little over 80 yards a game and running back Aaron Peterson who averages around 105 yards per game.
Most impressive maybe is the fact that last week they eliminated George Wythe which was predicted by many to end up in the state championship game.
One thing for sure is that Friday’s game could go down as one of the best games in single A all year. The game will take place at Carl F Williams Field in Bath County this upcoming Friday at 3:30Pm.
