COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The community of Covington came together on Tuesday, Nov. 19 to celebrate the grand opening of the new Alley Gallery in the heart of the city. The project, several years in the making, is the result of a collaborative effort between local leaders, businesses, and residents to revitalize the downtown area. The vibrant murals and interactive art installations that now adorn the once-drab alleyway have breathed new life into the community.
“This is just a prime example of the kind of revitalization we’ve been seeing in our area,” said one representative from Alleghany Highlands Economic Development. “It’s so exciting to see the community come together and create something truly special.”
Jennifer Simpson Smith, the driving force behind the Alley Gallery project, expressed her enthusiasm for the new addition to the neighborhood. “We’re so excited to bring this to the community,” she said. “We have the sensory path, the alley gallery, and so much more. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s all worth it to see the smiles on people’s faces.”
The event was marked by a ceremonial ribbon cutting, with local officials and community leaders in attendance. Sponsors like Alleghany Asphalt were recognized for their financial support, and the crowd cheered as the ribbon was snipped, officially opening the Alley Gallery to the public.
“This is the kind of thing that brings a community together,” said Lance Carson, representing the City of Covington. “When we all work together, we can accomplish so much. This is just the beginning of what we can do.”
With plans for more interactive elements and additional art displays in the works, the Alley Gallery is poised to become a hub of activity and creativity in Covington. As residents and visitors alike explore the new space, the sense of pride and excitement in the community is evident.
“It’s a sight to see,” said Alleghany County Board of Supervisors Chairperson Matt Garten. “This is the kind of thing that really makes Covington a special place to be. I can’t wait to see what else we can do.”
