It’s that time of the year where we are at the halfway mark for high school football and it’s time to start playing potential regional playoff matchups following the weekly release of the Virginia High School League Football Rankings.

Alleghany heads into Week 6 undefeated at 5-0 and 1-0 in the Three Rivers District. The Cougars are off this week for their bye week before wrapping up a four-game homestand with Glenvar next Friday at Casey Field.

For now, we look at this week’s rankings of high school football action where Alleghany comes into the week ranked 3rd in the Class 3, Region C. The Cougars are one of three teams left unbeaten in the region along with Liberty Christian Academy (LCA), who are ranked 1st, and Turner Ashby, who are ranked second. The top eight teams make the regional tournament.

Last year Alleghany finished fourth following a 9-1 regular season and could have potentially even missed the regional tournament with a second regular season loss in this juggernaut region. It all comes down to points, which you can view below the full ranking.

If the season had ended today (we’ll play this out every week until the ranking and bracket is official following the final regular season games) Alleghany would host East Rockingham of the Valley District.

However, there’s still six weeks of football remaining, and these rankings will certainly go up and down, especially from the teams ranked 5 and lower. A team like Spotswood, who won the Valley District last season and finished the regular season 9-1 and ranked third in the regional playoff, currently sits in the 12th spot. The Trailblazers who are 3-2 overall this season will most likely reach the playoffs with several weeks remaining and chances to leap other teams.

For now, it’s fun to play matchups and who teams might play and where they could play. We’ll keep updating as the season goes along. Meanwhile Alleghany currently is in a first-place tie with Carroll County and Floyd County at 1-0 in the Three Rivers District. Following their statement win over Radford last Friday, the Cougars with a win over Glenvar next week could be on their way to a district title and another regional home playoff.
