HILLSVILLE – Unbeaten in five non-district contests, Alleghany went on the road to Hillsville to take on Carroll County in their Three Rivers District volleyball opener where the Cavaliers prevailed victorious in tightly contested four sets winning 25-22, 25-21. 17-25, 25-21.
The Cougars (5-1, 0-1 TRD) played a competitive volleyball match in all four sets and despite dropping the first two, AHS would not give up.
Following a third set which the Cougars seemingly controlled with a 25-17 win, the team built a 12-5 advantage in the fourth set and seemed to have control before the Cavaliers eventually went on to outscore AHS 20-9 to win the fourth and final set.
After junior Hannah Hensley put Alleghany up 15-10 with a kill in the fourth set, the Cougars looked in position to take a six-point advantage until AHS was whistled for a net violation.
Following the whistle the momentum all shifted to Carroll County who scored seven straight points to build a 17-15 lead which would be a lead they would never relinquish. During the Cavaliers’ run to take the lead, they outscored the Cougars 12-3.
Seniors Kaiya Lian (15), Laken Tingler (15), and Bryce Leitch (13) combined for 43 kills. Leitch led the team with 16 digs, while Lian and senior Jayahna Hughes each added 12.
Sophomore Kendra Dressler had 44 assists.
The Alleghany JV team improved to 5-1, 1-0 TRD following their win over Carroll County prior to the varsity contest as they won to two-sets 25-18, 25-14.
