Covington’s girls put three players in double figures at the Cougar Den Monday night in dumping Grace Christian, 51-31, in a non-district contest.
Shanice Laws posted a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double, while handing out six assists, Daylin Tyree chipped in 12 points and Autumn Phillips added 10.
Mary Woodson just missed double digits with eight.
“We made a couple of changes coming into this game and I think they will pay off in the long run,” said CHS coach Mark Pifer.
“Shanice played very well, very unselfish. Daylin probably had her best shooting night of the season and Autumn was aggressive offensively.”
The Cougars trailed 18-17 after one quarter, but allowed just 13 points the rest of the game.
Covington outscored Grace 14-0 in the second quarter, led by Tyree’s seven.
Moore added eight rebounds for the winners, while Marguerite Ballou added six.
“We were able to go to our bench early and that’s good,” Pifer added. “We had some girls get in and really stick their noses in and play hard.”
Holly Wenger led Grace Christian with 10 points, all coming in the opening quarter.
The Cougars, now 8-5 on the year, host Pioneer District leading Bath County Wednesday night.
In Monday’s preliminary, Samone Moore scored a game-high 20 points in a convincing 42-7 Little Cougar victory.
Leteashia Clarke and Bailey Hall added five each, Tiffany Billups scored four, Montana Hall and Kristina Huffman both scored three and Jayna Davis added two for the winners, now 7-5 on the year.
Laura Rice scored four for Grace Christian.
Note: Covington’s home game Wednesday will be FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) night at the Cougar Den.
All donations collected will be put toward outdoor playground equipment for the handicapped.
Ashleigh Brie, a senior member of the Covington basketball team and FCA president, invites all FCA members and athletes to come out and support the event.
