In an effort to acknowledge the outstanding accomplishments of long-time Covington resident, Delethea Quarles, many in the Alleghany Highlands orchestrated a special ceremony where friends, family, and community members gathered to celebrate. Quarles was announced as U.S. Olympic Track and Field Coach earlier this year and she recently traveled to Paris, France to cheer on and encourage the Track and Field athletes. Her involvement brought new excitement for local residents during the weeks of competition. On September 2, 2024 as part of the Labor Day Celebration, Delethea accepted a key to Covington City along with a beautiful plaque that commemorated the presentation of a key to the entire Alleghany Highlands. Family members, friends, teammates, classmates, and former coaches all gathered around her as she spoke with gratitude about the honor. Matt Garten, Chairman of the Alleghany Board of Supervisors, called Quarles a “hometown hero” and Mayor Tom Sibold recognized the enthusiasm she brought to the community saying, “It’s things like this that bring all Virginians together.”
Ms. Quarles expressed deep appreciation and many thanks for the honor recognizing that “when accomplishments come you’re on a high but what makes it really special is who you have to celebrate it with.” She went on to say “this is us…Covington is just as much a part of that journey to Paris”. After graduating from Alleghany High School in 1984, she went on to advance her track and field efforts at Liberty University. She then became a coach for the University of South Carolina until recently becoming part of the James Madison Track and Field staff. “My story is this that most of you can relate to…people ask me all of the time if there is anything good that comes from Covington, and my answer is always, ‘Yes!’ There is a lot of great that comes out of Covington!” In a passionate plea to the younger members of the crowd, Quarles continued, “Young people…If I did it, you can do more! There is opportunity! Now there is even more opportunity than I had.” She challenged them to reach for their goals and try new things. Ms. Quarles also took time to acknowledge the effort of her father and mother who supported and encouraged her throughout her journey. She stated, “the biggest thing my mom did for me is she taught me who Jesus Christ is and there is no way I could have done all of this without the favor of God in my life.” Finally, she offered the crowd one final recognition saying, “How did I get to be an Olympic Coach? It’s because of all of you! Thank you!”
