STAUNTON – Twelve runs through the first three innings was more than enough run support for Staunton to cruise past Covington 13-3 in a shortened 7-inning Valley Baseball League game this past Saturday evening in Staunton.
Heading into the game Gage Bibey was only 1-for-5 at the plate with no runs batted in. In his second at bat of the game against the Lumberjacks on Saturday evening, Bibey crushed a grand slam home run which at the time put the Braves well ahead of the Jacks at 9-0.
The Jacks would score three times in what would be their last at bats during the seventh inning on RBIs from Bryan Melo, Gregory Melo, and Cameron Hill. G. Melo was the lone Jack to have a multiple-hit game.
It was a rough outing for Gabriel Gutierrez who was rocked for 10 runs on seven hits in two innings on the mound.
In his second appearance of the season Hunter Jones earned the win in relief of starter Eli Lamb. Jones tossed 3.2 innings of scoring relief to earn his first win.
The game was only seven innings due to the VBL rules of a 10-run advantage after seven innings.
