In honor of Black History Month, Ms. Slusser’s, Ms. Arthur’s, and Mrs. Easton’s fourth-grade classes at Jeter-Watson Elementary School created artwork of historical black figures and displayed their work at the Alleghany Highlands Industrial Discovery and C&O Depot Centers, both are located on Maple Avenue in Covington.
Throughout BHM, the students explored two remarkable artists: Alma Thomas and Jean-Michel Basquiat. “They have created vibrant abstract paintings inspired by Thomas’ style. As well as crown motifs in the style of Basquiat. Students have been discovering new artistic techniques while deepening their understanding of BH and artistic expression.”
They also created banners of historical black figures, outlining their early and adult lives; their claims to fame, and other interesting facts.
These art displays will be up through the month of February. The admission to these two attractions is free and they are open M—F, from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm.
Though the depot is closed on weekends, the students promised to have their parents drive them by to get a view of their artwork.
