George Thomas “Tommy” Garten
Mr. George Thomas “Tommy” Garten, age 72, of Covington, died Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at his residence. He was the husband of Mary Beth Putnam Garten to whom he was married to for forty-five years.
Mr. Garten was born November 5, 1951, in Covington, the son of the late George Elbert Garten and Minnie Ellis Garten. He was the owner and operator of Garten Trucking and Warehousing and Greenways Realty and Auction.
In addition to his wife, Mary Beth, Mr. Garten is survived by two sons, George Mathew “Matt” Garten and wife, Kristen Byer Garten of Covington and Robert Christopher “Dizzy” Garten and wife Heidi Sparks Garten of Glen Wilton; five grandchildren, Matthew Tate Garten, Thomas Henry “Hank” Garten, Georgia Ann Garten, Robert Maxwell Garten and Ellis Elizabeth Garten; sister, Patricia Garten Johnson of Covington; mother-in-law, Elma Jayne Putnam; sister-in-law, Amy Putnum Haymaker and husband, Thomas ; nieces and nephews, Christopher “Chris” Johnson, Todd Johnson, Anne Marie Johnson Strum, Amiee Johnson Merrins, George Taylor, Jackson Haymaker and Sawyer Haymaker.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Covington Middle School with Rev. Brandon Nicely officiating assisted by Father Augustine Lukenge. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Josh Johnson, John Franson, Tate Garten, Hank Garten, Chris Johnson, George Taylor, Dino Jeter, Jackson Haymaker, Sawyer Haymaker and Darren Venable.
A Rosary will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Friday, January 26, 2024, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Father Louis Benoit officiating.
