ELLISTON – Over the weekend, the Alleghany Cougars varsity and JV volleyball teams took part in their first ever volleyball tournament at Eastern Montgomery High School.
Alleghany prevailed victorious, winning the volleyball tournament championship in both varsity and JV.
The tournament featured Alleghany, Craig County, Eastern Montgomery, and Roanoke Catholic.
Each team in the tournament played against one another in a full-round robin prior to the single-elimination tournament.
In the varsity tournament, Alleghany cruised to a championship as they went unbeaten in all their matches and sets. The Cougars closest game was the second set of the championship against Eastern Montgomery as the score was decided by just three points. All of the other sets prior to the final set in the tournament title game, the Cougars had won by more than 10 points.
It was much of the same for the Alleghany JV team who also won their tournament championship. The JV Cougars also went unbeaten, while their closest set was as well in the second set of the tournament final against Eastern Montgomery as they were separated by eight points.
Alleghany has now won six straight matches after dropping their season opener. Meanwhile following the JV tournament championship, they remain undefeated at 7-0.
The Cougars host the Wilson Memorial Green Hornets on Tuesday at the Clifton Academy. The Green Hornets are the only team to defeat the Cougars varsity team this season.
