NEW MARKET – After seeing their lead slip away late in their last game, the Covington Lumberjacks could have gone either one of two ways, see all their momentum they created over the last week slip away or pick up where they left off.
How about the ladder.
Covington picked right back where they left off after seeing their five-game losing streak be snapped by Charlottesville two nights ago following a 7-0 defeat of the New Market Rebels on Monday, July 3rd in a shortened seven inning game which was game one of their double-header.
A three-run second inning jump started the Lumberjacks offense as Victor Sanchez highlighted the inning with a two-run home run.
After adding a run in the fifth inning, Covington opened the game up with a three-run eighth inning that was highlighted by Gregory Melo’s third home run of the season as he belted a three-run shot over the fence.
The Lumberjacks finished with nine team hits in which Melo accounted for one-third of the teams’ production as he went 3-for-4 at the plate while leading the team in RBIs with three. Sanchez was the only other batter in the lineup with a multi-hit game at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with his two RBI’s.
While the offense was solid at the plate with big production from Melo and Sanchez, on the mound Payton Waters in just his second start on the mound pitched a seven-inning complete game to earn his first win of the season.
In his seven-shutout inning, Waters gave up just three hits, while striking out six.
New Market was held to just three hits in the loss (all singles) and three total base runners.
Covington has now won six of their last seven games.
