LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Highlands School Board has recognized Oliver Distributing Co. in Covington for its ongoing support of the school division.
At the school board’s request, the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) placed Oliver Distributing on its Business Honor Roll for 2022. David Oliver, the president of Oliver Distributing, attended a recent school board meeting to receive a resolution that was approved by the school board earlier this year.
Oliver Distributing will also receive a personalized recognition certificate and a congratulatory letter from the VSBA. Oliver Distributing will be among Business Honor Roll recipients that will be listed in an upcoming VSBA newsletter.
“Over the past few years, we have learned to appreciate some of the things that we all used to take for granted before COVID-19. Oliver Distributing has a long history of helping us keep our buildings clean, well-stocked and in great condition, and they certainly maintained that throughout the pandemic. We are lucky to have a great community partner in Oliver Distributing, and we appreciate their huge investment in their new location in Covington,” said Jacob Wright, chair of the AHPS School Board.
Businesses of all sizes play a key role in supporting local schools and communities. They contribute to local schools in many ways, including helping with in-kind or financial contributions, donating to scholarship programs, supporting extracurricular activities, offering job shadowing or other work-based learning opportunities, volunteering in schools and sponsoring field trips.
A family-owned business, Oliver Distributing was founded in 1955 by Ralph Oliver. Oliver’s offers a variety of products and services, and it prides itself as “Being a good and honest business where handshakes mean something.” David Oliver is the third generation of the Oliver family involved in operating the business. In 2007, he took over responsibilities for the day-to-day operations from his father, Jim Oliver.
The school division has been particularly thankful to Oliver Distributing for its ongoing support in the division’s response to the pandemic and cleaning needs.
Oliver Distributing is the first local business to be nominated by Alleghany Highlands Public Schools for the VSBA Honor. In 2022, the Alleghany County School Board nominated LewisGale Hospital Alleghany for the VSBA recognition with special acknowledgment of its support for work-based learning opportunities.
The Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division was created on July 1, 2022, through the merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools and Jackson River Technical Center. The school division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the city of Covington, and it serves approximately 2,700 students.
