The Alleghany junior varsity Mountaineers took home a 4-3 victory over the Riverheads Gladiators JV on Tuesday, March 28.

Riverheads got things started in the first inning, when Landon Gibson doubled on a 2-2 count and drove in the game’s first run.

Alleghany knotted the game up at 1-all in the bottom of the first inning when Brady May singled home Graham Brewster, who had doubled to get on earlier in the frame.

The Mountaineers (5-0) pulled away for good with two runs in the third inning. An error scored one run for Alleghany, and Jalen Raether singled on a 2-0 count and drove in Tucker Phillips.

After three, Alleghany led 3-1.

May was on the pitcher’s mound for Alleghany. He allowed four hits and three runs over 6.2 innings and struck out four batters. He picked up the victory.

Ethan Mulcahy was on the hill for the Gladiators. The righthander pitched five innings, allowed six hits and four runs while striking out one. Gabe Miller threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Down 4-3 in the seventh, and with a runner on third base, Phillips stepped up and struck out the final batter to end the game and seal the win for Alleghany. Phillips was also credited with the save.

May and Raether went 2-4 and 2-3, respectively. May also scored a run and had an RBI.

The Mountaineers played Greenbrier East, West Virginia, yesterday, April 4. Check back for a recap.
