This past Friday, the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (14-7) wrapped up the regular season with a 52-41 victory over the Auburn Lady Eagles.
The win sends the Lady Mountaineers to the Class 2, Regional C tournament where they will have a first round bye as the team secured a number one seed in the sub-region. The Lady Mounties will host their quarterfinal matchup on Monday, February 20th. Their opponent is TB
The Lady Mountaineers used three-point shooting and held off a potentially Lady Eagles rally to pick up their 14th win of the season.
After a back and forth first quarter in which the Lady Mountaineers held onto a slim one point lead after the quarters end, the Lady Mountaineers would turn up the volume in the second quarter with a 19-point period.
The Lady Mountaineers would knock down four of their 10 three-pointers in the second quarter.
After falling behind 11-10 to start the second, Abbie Fridley and Macyn Cash would connect on back to back three-pointers to take a 16-11 lead. Moments later, Zamera Hayslett dropped a three-pointer to put the Lady Mountaineers up 21-13.
The Lady Mountaineers would push their lead to as high as 13 points in the second quarter and took a 29-19 lead at the end of the first half.
In the third quarter, Cash and Keene kept the Lady Mountaineers lead steady at double digits. However, the Lady Eagles would get with eight points at 40-32 towards the end of the quarter. The Lady Mountaineers though would end the third period scoring six straight points thanks to a Keene three-pointer and a Kelsey Nicely three-point play to take a 46-32 lead.
Despite trailing by 14 points, the Lady Eagles led by Rhyland Rorrer would cut the deficit down in half to just seven points as they would score seven straight points to start the fourth.
The Lady Mountaineers meanwhile, would be held scoreless for over six minutes which helped the Lady Eagles get back in the game.
With 1:51 left in the game, Cash found an open Bryce Leitch who knocked down a three-pointer to put the team back up double digits at 49-39. It was the big shot the Lady Mountaineers needed.
In the final minute the Lady Mountaineers sealed the game knocking down three out of four free throw attempts.
Keene led all scorers with a game-high 18 points for the Lady Mountaineers. She made four three-pointers.
For the Lady Eagles, Rorrer led the team with a team-high 10 points.
Heading into the regional tournament, the Lady Mountaineers are rolling having won four of their last five games.
