After missing the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (6-0) previous two games, the junior standout scored a game and season-high 18 points in the teams 60-29 victory over the Roanoke Catholic Lady Celtics (3-6) on Wednesday evening.
It was a much different game than the last time these two teams met. Back on December 1st, the Lady Mountaineers rallied from nine points down in the second half to beat the Lady Celtics 40-33.
Wednesday’s game started out like their first meeting as the two teams were locked in with another following the first quarter in which the Lady Mountaineers held a 15-11 lead.
Cash scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter which saw minimal separation between the two teams as the Lady Mountaineers only led by as much as four points.
The game-changer, the second quarter.
The Lady Mountaineers held the Lady Celtics to two points in the second quarter as they outscored them 19-2.
After Mickie O’Herron made a layup with a one minute left in the first quarter for the Lady Celtics, the Lady Mountaineers would go on 13-0 scoring run that went into the later stages of the second quarter.
The scoring drought ended by O’Herron who knocked down a pair of free throws. That was all the scoring for the Lady Celtics in the quarter. The team went scoreless for six and half minutes from the first quarter into the second.
In the second quarter, Bryce Leitch scored nine of her 11 points. Leitch also had a pair of assists in the quarter as well, as she finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, tied for a game-high four assists, and two steals.
The Lady Mountaineers led 34-13 at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Mountaineers lead grew to 25 points after the Lady Celtics turned the ball over on five of their first offensive possessions.
Down 38-13, the Lady Celtics did chip away at the lead and brought the deficit under 20 points following a 7-0 scoring run, the teams largest scoring run of the game. The Lady Celtics went over 12 minutes without a made field goal before O’Herron’s layup in the third quarter with 4:25 remaining.
With the score now 38-20, the Lady Mountaineers scoring drought ended on a Kelsey Nicely free throw. She would miss her second attempt, but Abbie Fridley would grab the offensive rebound and the put the ball back up and through the hoop for two more points to build the Lady Mountaineers lead back up to 21 points at 41-20.
Those would be the final points of the third quarter as each team was held to just seven points.
In the fourth quarter, Cash and Kendell Keene knocked down three-pointers to start the quarter which helped build the Lady Mountaineers lead to 29 points at 49-20.
The Lady Mountaineers would build their lead as high as 31 points multiple times in the final quarter.
Cash who finished with a game and season-high 18 points also had four assists, four steals, two rebounds, and a block. Cash also knocked down four of the Lady Mountaineers nine three-pointers.
Keene added 12 points, along with three steals, one assist, and she added two made three-pointers. Meanwhile, Zamera Hayslett had eight points and knocked down two three-pointers.
For the Lady Celtics, the team finished with two players in double figures scoring with O’Herron and Alexandria Nance each having scored 10. Nace did have a three-point play in the first quarter and knocked down the teams only made three-pointer in the third.
The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Lady Celtics.
Free-throws were hard to come by in this one. There was a total of nine attempted free-throws shots. The Lady Mountaineers made 3-of-4, while the Lady Celtics made 4-of-5 attempts at the line.
The Lady Mountaineers Thursday evening away game against Buffalo Gap was postponed. There is no current makeup date announced. The next scheduled game for the Lady Mountaineers is next Wednesday, December 28th at Mountaineer Arena where they will host Liberty at 6:00 p.m.
