Greece And Turkey Are Deadlocked
No compromise in the deadlock on the question of the Turco-Greece reparations was found today at the Near East conference. M. Venizelos, head of the Greek delegation, spent a feverish day yesterday consulting with various conference leaders discussing ways and means in an endeavor to ameliorate the situation. Yesterday afternoon, tired but smiling, he emerged from the hotel elevator. He was immediately surrounded by a group of newspaper men who desired to know the trend of affairs. A young Turkish correspondent asked the former Premier if he was optimistic or pessimistic.

Coal Bids To Be Opened By School Board
Specifications on coal agreed to by all prospective bidders, both retail and wholesale, and sent out by Superintendent Godby last Tuesday in conformity with a resolution of the school board of Alleghany County, have resulted in a number of sealed bids being sent in. The old Baker homestead on Riverside Avenue, now owned by Miss Ella Baker, added another bit of interest to its history on Friday. The house, which is probably the oldest in Covington, is having some repairs and improvements made inside and on Friday, when the floor was taken up, a well-preserved tree trunk was revealed.

Covington’s Water Plant In Critical Need Of Repair
The city of Covington’s water system is in critical need of repair according to a spokesman from the Virginia Department of Health and the estimated cost to refurbish the system is over $1 million, City Manager Mike Mahaney said. Mahaney has several capital items proposed in the budget for improvements to the city’s water system and also $136,000 is included for engineering plans for the upgrading of the Jackson River Plant.

Dedication Planned For C.F. Amphitheater Friday Afternoon
A dedication ceremony to recognize the design/buildLAB student team and the many supporters and donors to the Masonic Amphitheater project will be held Friday at 4 p.m. on the property behind the Masonic Theatre, which is the new location for the amphitheater. John Hillert, president of the Masonic Theatre Preservation Foundation, said, “There have been numerous studies of long-range planning goals for the Alleghany Highlands downtown areas and an amphitheater and park area behind the Masonic Theatre was always a suggestion, pairing it with the beautiful space by Smith Creek behind the Masonic Theatre and the talent of the third-year architecture students from Virginia Tech plus a grant from The Alleghany Foundation, and all the elements came together to achieve the reality of the Masonic Amphitheater”.
