Backed by Ashton Cook’s (W, 1-for-3) 11 strikeouts, the Covington Cougars varsity baseball team defeated the Bath County Chargers on Thursday evening, 12-2 at Casey Field.

Cook, was sensational on the mound for the Cougars where he pitched a complete game. Cook, surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits, while walking one, and as mentioned struck out 11.

As good as Cook was on the mound, he was given plenty of run support from his offense. Four Cougars had two RBI’s each; Cook, Ethan Martin (2-for-4), Brady Howard (1-for-3, and Levi Dressler (1-for-2). Hayden Rodgers (0-for-2) and Eli Dressler (0-for-0) each had an RBI.

It was a rough go on the mound for Chargers starter C Lowery (L, 2-for-3), as he gave up 12 runs (11 earned) and walked 17 batters. The 17 walks were a season high for the Cougars offense. C. Lowery, walked five straight batters twice in the teams loss.

Despite his tough outing on the mound, C. Lowery, did collect two of the teams three hits.

The Chargers opened the game grabbing a 1-0 lead after the first inning. C. Lowery, had a one-out double in the first inning and would later score on one of two Cougars errors committed.

In the bottom of the second inning, C. Lowery, started the inning off strong by striking out the first batter faced. Then it all went downhill as C. Lowery walked the next five batters which scored two for the Cougars to give them a 2-1 lead. The Cougars added a third run in the inning following a wild pitch from C. Lowery, that scored Conlan Staunton (0-for-1).

Leading 3-1, the Cougars erupted with a four run fourth inning highlighted by RBI’s from Cook, L. Dressler, and Howard. The Cougars took a 7-1 lead after four innings.

After the Chargers grabbed a run back in the top half of the fifth inning, the Cougars added three more to the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. Martin, ripped a two-run single to center field, which put the team up 9-2. Two batters later, Howard, had an RBI infield single to put the team up 10-2.

With an eight run lead, the Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. C. Lowery, opened the inning hitting Dylan Williams (0-for-0). C. Lowery, would go on and walk the next four batters which scored the games final two runs.

The Cougars are back on the diamond this evening at 5:00 p.m. as the team hosts Narrows.
