Levi Dressler (W, 3-for-4) put on a show Thursday for the Covington Cougars (4-5) varsity baseball team in their 16-10 victory on the road against the Craig County Rockets.
L. Dressler, led the way both on offense and on the mound. In the Cougars victory, L. Dressler, led the team with six RBI’s including a three-run homerun. On the mound, despite giving up 10 runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings, L. Dressler, struck out a season and team(individual)-high 14 batters. L. Dressler, fell a double shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Cougars had not scored 10 or more runs since their opening day victory against Roanoke Catholic where they scored 17.
The offense not only was led by Dressler, Ethan Martin (3-for-4), Luke Conner (1-for-3), and Tanner Hoke (1-for-2), each provided RBI’s in the teams win. Conner, had two RBI’s, while Martin, recorded his second straight game of three or more hits.
Following a five-game losing streak, the Cougars have now won three in a row.
It was a rough outing for the Rockets despite putting up 10 runs on the scoreboard, which normally enough for a team to win.
The Rockets pitching staff in the loss to the Cougars walked 13 batters which was another season-high for the Cougars. Hayden Rodgers (0-for-1), walked a team-high four times for the Cougars, while also scoring four runs.
Dylan Crawford (L, 3-for-4) and Jaycob Wolfe (1-for-3), both struggled on the mound by surrendering all 16 runs (12 earned, six each). However, despite his struggles on the mound, Crawford, had a big day at the plate. Crawford, led the team with three hits in four at bats and had an RBI. Wolfe, also had an RBI for the Rockets in the loss.
With the score tied at 2-2, the Cougars erupted for a five-run third inning to give the team a 7-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by L. Dressler’s three-run home run.
The Rockets grabbed two runs back in the home half of the third inning to cut the lead to just three runs at 7-4.
Trailing 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rockets used a big four-run inning to tie the game. After grabbing a few runs early on in the inning to cut the lead down to two runs, Malachi Shradder (1-for-3) hit a ground ball to the left side of the infield and reached base on a fielding error that allowed two runs to score to the game.
The Cougars did not allow the Rockets comeback to change momentum as the team quickly bounced back and answered with a three-run sixth inning to regain the lead at 12-9. Martin’s RBI double, helped put the team up three runs after the inning.
After the Rockets got a run back in the home half of the sixth inning, the Cougars grabbed four insurance runs in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI double by Tanner Hoke (1-for-2) and a a two-run triple by L. Dressler.
Both teams struggled defensively as there was a total of 11 errors in the game. The Cougars committed six, while the Rockets finished with five.
The Cougars return to the diamond on Tuesday as the team hosts the Narrows Green Wave at 5:00 p.m. at Casey Field.
