The Alleghany Foundation has elected Dr. Leo Mulcahy and Lynda Thompson to its board of directors, effective July 23.

In addition, inaugural board member Patrick Henry Winston, Jr. was elected to director emeritus status by the board.

“The foundation thanks Mr. Winston for his many years of dedicated service to the board, and welcomes Dr. Mulcahy and Ms. Thompson to their positions,” says Charles Kahle, Foundation president. “Our region benefits from the commitments made by the passionate individuals who serve on our board, who charge us to continually seek opportunities to improve our community. We’re grateful for past service and look forward to what the future holds.”

A resident of Alleghany County for more than 32 years, Dr. Mulcahy retired from MeadWestvaco Corporation after more than 30 years of service, most recently as vice president and general manager, Consumer Packaging Division.

After retirement from MeadWestvaco, he also headed the Advanced Manufacturing and Packaging Technology program at Dabney Lancaster Community College for two years.

He serves on the board of directors of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA and Jackson River Enterprises and is a partner with CLEAR, LLC.

He and his wife, Heide, live in Covington and are the parents of three grown children.

“I’m pleased to join the Alleghany Foundation board,” says Mulcahy. “The foundation is a fine organization that has done much to improve the quality of life in our area. I look forward to being an active board member and helping in any way I can.”

Thompson, a resident in Alleghany County for 38 years, has served as director of the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation since 2002 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Scott Hill Retirement Community.

A former music teacher in area schools, she also serves as music director for Calvary Christian Church, received the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year award in 2002, and in 2007 was named the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother.

She is the mother of three children and lives in Clearwater Park with her husband, Sonny.

Thompson notes that The Alleghany Foundation has had a tremendously positive impact on the Alleghany Highlands community.

“I am honored and proud to be a part of the Foundation as it moves forward in serving to meet the breadth of needs in education, health, and business in our area,” she says.

In other board action, Patrick Henry Winston, Jr. was elected to director emeritus after serving 15 years on The Alleghany Foundation board of directors.

He says of his service, “the Alleghany Highlands has been blessed in many ways. It’s natural beauty, wonderful people, and having The Alleghany Foundation. It has been an honor for me to have served on the board. The Foundation’s directors and staff are hard working, dedicated citizens who continue to perpetuate growth and the betterment of the community. I cherish my years of service with feelings of great pride and accomplishment.”

Winston, who retired as president and CEO of First Virginia Bank Highlands in 1999, joined the inaugural Foundation board in 1996, serving as secretary-treasurer.

During his tenure, the Foundation has awarded more than $34 million to Alleghany Highlands organizations to improve the quality of life for community residents.

“In these times of economic uncertainty, the role that the foundation plays in supporting community services is even more critical,” said Alleghany Foundation Executive Director Mary Fant Donnan. “Through our volunteer board’s strong leadership, The Foundation continues to provide responsible management of this important community asset.”

The Alleghany Foundation is a nonprofit foundation based in Covington. The Foundation awards grants twice a year.

Nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations interested in requesting funding from the Foundation should submit an application, following the instructions outlined in the Foundation’s application guidelines brochure or on the website.

The Alleghany Foundation was established in 1995 with $35 million in proceeds from the sale of the Alleghany Regional Hospital. It is organized for charitable purposes.

The Foundation’s vision is to be a resource for and partner with eligible organizations to make the Alleghany Highlands a civically engaged, prosperous region that builds upon its assets to produce vigorous opportunities for all its residents.
