COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany answered an early deficit with a surge and never slowed, rolling past Greenbrier East 17-2 Monday behind Emma Skidmore and a 16-hit attack.

Greenbrier East struck first on Reagan Cline’s solo home run in the top of the first. Alleghany flipped it immediately in the bottom half. Maddy Lowry doubled to start the rally, Paige Webb singled in a run, Kaylee Nicely reached on an error that scored another, and Brianna Terrell added an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.

The Cougars added on in the second. Lowry doubled in a run, Ava Howard followed with a two-run single, and Terrell delivered another RBI hit to push the margin to 7-1.

Howard led the offense, driving in four runs on three hits. He singled in the second to score two, then added two RBI singles in the third.

Alleghany broke it open with a nine-run third. Lowry drove in a run, Howard added another RBI single, Webb drew a bases-loaded walk, an error scored two, and Peyton Broughman delivered a three-run single. Howard capped the inning with another RBI hit as the lead stretched to 16-1.

The Cougars added on in the fourth. Webb tripled and later scored, and Callie Uzzell drove in a run. Greenbrier East got a solo home run from Hayley Heaster in the inning.

Skidmore controlled the rest. He allowed two hits and two runs over five innings, striking out 11 without a walk.

Alleghany finished with 16 hits. Lowry and Howard each had three, while Skidmore, Webb, Terrell and Broughman added multiple-hit games. Webb drew two walks as the Cougars worked six free passes and played error-free defense, with Terrell handling nine chances.

Cline and Heaster each had a hit and an RBI for Greenbrier East.
