COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Cougars fell victim to a Storm surge in this varsity-only Shenandoah District matchup as Staunton pulled away for a 45-33 win.
Alleghany held a 12-6 lead early in the second quarter before the Storm flipped the game with a 15-0 run. Staunton used three straight 3-pointers from Kerein Scott, Chasyn Smith and Nahla Gray to seize control and take a 21-15 lead into halftime.
Ja’Kara Heighter briefly halted the run with an old-fashioned three-point play to end the half, but Staunton wasted little time extending its advantage. The Storm outscored the Cougars 17-9 in the third quarter to open up a 38-24 cushion.
Heighter scored 10 points to lead Alleghany (0-9 Shenandoah, 1-15 overall). Taylor Stayton recorded eight points and 13 rebounds, Ty’Aieja Smith added eight points and nine rebounds, while Gracyn Profitt scored five and Zamya Hayslett added two.
