COVINGTON, Va. (VR)— One of the Alleghany Highlands’ most iconic and beloved destinations is set to receive a series of important enhancements that will improve safety, preservation, and the overall visitor experience at Humpback Bridge Wayside Park thanks to a grant from the Alleghany Foundation and support from VDOT.
The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism has announced the launch of Phase 1 of a comprehensive improvement project at the site, made possible through support from the Alleghany Foundation and in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Humpback Bridge is a cornerstone of heritage and outdoor tourism in the Alleghany Highlands, welcoming thousands of visitors annually while also serving as a cherished recreational space for local residents. The upcoming improvements are designed to protect this historic site while ensuring it
remains welcoming, safe, and visually appealing for years to come.
“Humpback Bridge is often a visitor’s first stop in the Alleghany Highlands, and first impressions matter,” said Josh Taylor, Executive Director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. “By leading this effort, we’re ensuring this landmark reflects the pride, care, and sense of place that define our community—while continuing to serve as a powerful driver of tourism and local economic activity.”
Enhancing a Landmark for Visitors and Residents
Phase 1 of the project focuses on essential site stabilization and park enhancements, including:
Riverbank erosion control and site-wide landscaping improvements
Stabilization and rehabilitation of the iconic LOVE sign foundations
Installation of bear-proof trash receptacles to improve cleanliness and protect wildlife
Construction of a concrete pad beneath the information kiosk to prevent further deterioration
Rehabilitation of various picnic tables and grills
Rehabilitation of existing LOVE sign elements
Enhanced park accessibility
A special component of the project will preserve a piece of the site’s story. The original tree that once served as the “V” in the LOVE sign—damaged by natural causes—will be repurposed by local business, Union Church Millworks into a new wooden “V,” honoring the history of the site while celebrating local craftsmanship.
Collaboration Driving Lasting Impact
In coordination with the Chamber’s efforts, VDOT is undertaking additional improvements at the site, including upgraded picnic tables and grills, enhanced ADA accessibility near the bridge entrance, and new railing/ease of access on the far side of the bridge, making the site welcoming and accessible to all.
“This project is a great example of how collaboration leads to real results,” Taylor added. “When local organizations, state partners, and community supporters work together, we can make meaningful investments that benefit both tourism and everyday life in the Alleghany Highlands.”
Looking Ahead
This work represents the first phase of a broader vision for Humpback Bridge Wayside Park. By addressing critical infrastructure and preservation needs now, the project lays the foundation for future enhancements that will further strengthen the site as a premier destination and community asset.
As one of the most visited locations in the region—and often a visitor’s first stop in the Alleghany Highlands—continued collaboration to ensure Humpback Bridge reflects the care and pride of the community is essential.
