AHPS Announces 2026-2027 Academic Year Calendar

LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools has released its 2026-2027 school calendar, officially approved by the School Board on Dec. 15, 2025. The 180-day school year will start Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, and wrap up with an early release on Wednesday, May 26, 2027.

“We’re so excited about all the wonderful things happening this school year and are already planning ahead for a successful 2026-2027 year,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS. “This calendar balances learning time with breaks so students, families, and staff can recharge and enjoy the year.”

Important Dates and Breaks:

 Labor Day: Sept. 7, 2026
 Thanksgiving: Nov. 25-27, 2026
 Winter Break: Dec. 21, 2026 – Jan. 1, 2027 (classes resume Jan. 4)
 First semester ends: Jan. 12, 2027
 Martin Luther King Jr. Day (no school): Jan. 18, 2027
 Presidents Day / Teacher Workday (no school): Feb. 15, 2027
 Spring Break: March 25-30, 2027
 High school graduation: May 21, 2027
 Last day of school (early release): May 26, 2027

Student Holidays and Teacher Workdays:

Sept. 28, 2026 – Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Oct. 16, 2026 – Professional Development / End of 1st Nine Weeks.
Nov. 11, 2026 – Veterans Day.
Jan. 11-12, 2027 – Teacher Workdays / Professional Development.

Weather and Schedule Notes:

The last day of school may change due to weather-related makeup days. Families should keep end-of-May plans flexible. Any changes will be communicated by the school division.
