COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany used a strong fourth quarter to hold off Staunton, pulling away late for a 66-61 Shenandoah District boys’ basketball win Saturday afternoon in the Cougar Den.
The Cougars entered the final eight minutes trailing by one, but responded with a decisive 23-17 run to close out the game and remain unbeaten in district play. Alleghany showed balance and efficiency offensively, with all five starters accounting for the scoring.
Talyn Elliott paced the Cougars with a game-high 20 points, providing a steady presence throughout. Bubby Entsminger followed with 17 points, while Jalen Raether added 15 in a well-rounded effort. Desmond Jordan rounded out the scoring with 10 points as Alleghany controlled the tempo down the stretch.
Staunton was led by Kayden Nulty’s 16 points, with Anthony Renne contributing 13 and Legend Reed adding 11, but the Storm were unable to keep pace in the closing minutes.
With the win, Alleghany improves to 3-0 in Shenandoah District play and remains tied for first place with Wilson. Staunton slips to 2-1 in district action.
